When my kids were little, one of my best girlfriends in Chicago made them each a quilt. Since I can barely sew a button on, I was in awe -- colorful fabric, hand sewn with love. I hung the quilts up, to be admired and to keep them safe.
After a few months, my girlfriend, who my kids call Aunt Sue, finally confronted me: quilts are made to be used, to be loved, to comfort, to warm. From that day on, my kids used their quilts. They have taken them to bed at night, taken them on vacation and to grandma's house. They've been drooled on, sat on, stepped on, cried on. They've been washed and dried, over and over again.
Today, my daughter received a belated birthday gift - a handmade quilt from my aunt and cousin up in Illinois. They took her favorite colors - black and pink - along with her passion - cats and dogs - to create a master piece out of fabric.
Quilting is an art.
Quilting is a labor of love.
Quilting is a way to stitch family together.
Quilting is a piece of family history.
My daughter will sleep with her new "gift" tonight,
even though it's hot and humid here in Missouri. Some where on the bed will be her "Aunt Sue" quilt.
She has the "gift" of family, to wrap around, to keep her safe, to tell her secrets to, to keep her warm.
She has the gift of a quilt.
