My First 100,000 Points - Color it Orange!

100,000

100,000 points

Wow!

I knew it was coming, knew it was right around the corner.

Yet I missed it!

I have Don Rogers to thank for pointing it out to me - I had turned the corner on 100,000 points. I made it!

So... what to say in my celebratory post?

I have no idea.

Google, help me!

If you Google "100,000" all sorts of pages come up, with all sorts of articles and posts. Not all of them good. I quickly skipped over those.

But one entry did catch my attention -

The United States of America printed a one hundred thousand dollar bill!

High denomination bills were printed in the US starting in 1929. The $100,000 bill featured Woodrow Wilson and was the only high denomination bill not printed in green. 100,000

High denomination bills were last printed in 1945 and officially discontinued on July 14, 1969, by the Federal Reserve System.

These bills were commonly used by banks and the Federal Government for large financial transactions. They were not commonly used as every day legal tender. (Mmm... wonder why!)

Finally in 1969, circulation of high-denomination bills was halted by an executive order from President RichardNixon, in an effort to combat organized crime.

So... what does this have to do with my milestone?

My last post, the one that had Don Rogers offering me his congratulations, was a collection of inspirational quotes by President Richard Nixon

I thought about coming full circle - about connecting the dots - about the road from here to there.

For 100,000 points, I have been connecting the dots, going down the road from here to there. I have made a lot of friends, I have gained business and I have gained more knowledge than I ever could have dreamed.

I have connected the last dot, to form my picture. Now, it's time to fill in the outline, to build upon what I have so far created in Active Rain.

To color my picture green. Or perhaps even orange

100,000

We cannot learn from one another until we stop shouting at one another -
until we speak quietly enough so that our words can be heard as well as our voices.
Richard Nixon

Snipping Tool in Windows Vista

Since first reading about Twitter here on Active Rain, I pay a visit to the site once a day, if I remember. I have said in numerous comments, I really don't "get" Twitter.

Tonight, thanks to Matt Wilkins I still don't get Twitter but I am thankful I took the time to sign in. Matt posted a twit about Microsoft's Snipping Tool in Vista.

I know, I know, you're probably thinkings, so what?

Every time I see someone using Snag It, I think to myself, "Deb, you really need to visit that site and buy that program." But, I've never taken the time to actually do it.

You have to admit, being able to snag a few words, part of a screen shot or even part of a photo is pretty darn cool. (Talking to one's self probably isn't all that cool.)

Now, I no longer have to remind myself to visit Snag It, thanks to Matt.

I followed the link he provided to the Microsoft website and saved the Snipping Tool to my tool bar. Now I can snip away when ever my heart desires.

Snip It

Granted, the Microsoft tool doesn't have all the bells and whistles as Snag It, but hey, for free and for the peace of mind of not talking to myself, it'll do just fine!

Good Ol' Boy Networking - Rural Missouri Style

I just finished reading a follow up post by Tracy Riba: Networking the "Good Ol' Boys"-Follow Up  Tracy had been invited to a seminar designed to teach a person how to Network with the Good Ol' Boys in the South. If you haven't read Tracy's post, be sure to - it's very enlightening.Pburg

After I read what Tracy had learned, I just had to laugh. I've been networking with the Good Ol' Boys of Phillipsburg, Missouri and didn't really know it.

You see, Phillipsburg Missouri has a population of 201 give or take a few. They have six or seven churches, a post office, city hall, a new library, a boat sewing factory, a city park and two gas stations. Town is located at exit 118 on I-44; one gas station on each side of the Interstate.

The gas station on the "town side" of I-44 is owned and operated by a couple "not from here." You hardly see the locals around there.

The other gas station, Massey's Conoco, is owned and operated by Wes & Diane Massey - natives of the P-burg area. They have a nice business off the Interstate and all the locals patronize their establishment. (If you're in the area, be sure to try the homemade biscuits and gravy for $2.50)

In addition to the coolers of pop and bottles of water, there are rows of canned goods and snacky stuff. Between the booths and the ice cream cooler, you'll find the most important spot of Massey's: the round table.

Round TableIt's here at the round table important decisions are made. The men gather around, once in the morning and again in the afternoon. (Unless of course it's raining - like today. Then the table is full all day, with the guys coming and going.) They discuss the local gossip, the county gossip, the political scene. They discuss who was at the last auction and who wasn't. They discuss who's road needs grated and who just thinks their road needs work. . . Don't let them fool you - the men gossip as much as the women do!

I try to stop by Massey's as often as I can. When I need gas, I try to time my purchase around these "unofficial" meetings. I enjoy hearing the stories of today and yesterday. I enjoy watching the interaction between the guys. I enjoy trying to figure out who has "rank" among those present. I've even promised a few of them United Country hats, that they will to wear to the local sale barn.

Last week, Wes Massey pulled me to the side - he heard about a piece of land. The owner doesn't want to "mess with a Realtor" but they would sell the property if I had a buyer.

I was so excited!

Believe it or not, when your not from here, "hearing" about a piece of property is progress. I'll never be one of them. With time, a few stories here and there and when asked, acting like I know nothing, I've become more accepted. That's networking, P-burg style.
